About Cashiers

Cashiers is an unincorporated village at the southern end of Jackson County, roughly 3,487 feet up on the plateau. Its center is the crossroads where US 64 meets NC 107, and the 13.2-acre Village Green park sits at that intersection. The county estimates about 1,700 year-round residents, with the summer population passing 10,000. A 1927 town charter is inactive and a 2003 vote to re-incorporate failed, so planning runs through Jackson County's Unified Development Ordinance and the 2019 Cashiers Small Area Plan.

The valley has been a summer retreat since the Zachary family sold land to Wade Hampton II in 1855, the tract that later became High Hampton. Today most of the plateau's gated golf and lake clubs carry Cashiers addresses: Wade Hampton, Mountaintop, The Chattooga Club, Trillium and High Hampton among them, with Lake Glenville a few miles north on NC 107. Nantahala National Forest surrounds the village, and Panthertown Valley, Whitewater Falls and the headwaters of the Chattooga River are close by. Housing ranges from in-village cottages to acreage homes inside the clubs, and the crossroads itself holds the shops, galleries and restaurants that serve the summer population.
