About Henderson County

Henderson County was formed in 1838 from the southern part of Buncombe County and is named for Leonard Henderson, a chief justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court. It runs about 375 square miles along the South Carolina line, from roughly 1,400 feet on the Broad River to 5,278 feet at Little Pisgah Mountain, with the Eastern Continental Divide passing through it. The 2020 census counted 116,281 residents, and the county belongs to the Asheville metropolitan area. Hendersonville, the county seat, sits at about 2,100 to 2,200 feet and is 22 miles south of Asheville by Interstate 26.

Apples have been the main crop since the Second World War. Henderson County grows well over half of North Carolina's apple crop, the state ranks seventh in the country, and the North Carolina Apple Festival has filled Main Street over Labor Day weekend for more than eighty years. Public land frames the county: the Pisgah Ranger District of Pisgah National Forest covers part of its western side, and DuPont State Recreational Forest, about 10,400 acres between Hendersonville and Brevard, holds a string of waterfalls on the Little River. Asheville Regional Airport lies just across the northern county line near Fletcher.

Buyers find several distinct settings within a short drive of one another: the Village of Flat Rock with the summer estates of Charleston families, the hillside town of Laurel Park, golf communities such as Champion Hills and Kenmure, the farm valleys of Mills River and Etowah, and downtown Hendersonville itself.
