Rutherford County, North Carolina

Rutherford County sits where the Blue Ridge drops to the foothills, and its most exceptional homes follow that line. In Hickory Nut Gorge, Lake Lure spreads roughly 720 acres of water along some 27 miles of shoreline beneath Chimney Rock State Park's 315-foot spire and the cliffs of Rumbling Bald, a setting for waterfront estates and gorge-view homesites.

South of the gorge the land opens into the thermal belt, the mild climate the county shares with neighboring Polk, and here the exceptional property is acreage: farms and equestrian land within a short drive of the Tryon International Equestrian Center, and historic homes in and around Rutherfordton, the county seat, just north of which Christopher Bechtler's private mint struck America's first gold dollar in 1832.
