High Hampton

Historic 1,400-acre inn and club on NC 107 south of Cashiers, Jackson County, at about 3,500 feet; established 1922, with a Fazio Design course reopened in 2021, Hampton Lake, croquet and cottages.

About High Hampton

High Hampton began as the summer estate of Wade Hampton II, who bought 450 acres in Cashiers Valley in 1855. His granddaughter Caroline and her husband, the surgeon William Halsted, took it over in 1890 and expanded the holding past 2,200 acres; after their deaths E. Lyndon and Gertrude McKee bought it in 1922 and opened an inn. A 1932 kitchen fire destroyed the original buildings, and the inn that stands today opened in 1933. The property, about 1,400 acres in Jackson County at roughly 3,500 feet, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

New owners bought the resort in 2017 and spent three years rebuilding it. Fazio Design rebuilt the golf course, keeping the corridors of George Cobb's 1956 eighteen, which had grown out of an 11-hole layout from the 1920s, but constructing six new holes and reworking the other twelve; it reopened in May 2021 as a par 71 of up to 6,900 yards. The inn, its restaurants and cottages were renovated at the same time. Club members have golf, Hampton Lake, tennis, pickleball, croquet lawns and three club restaurants, and the resort sells real estate on the grounds.
